(Radio Iowa) – The leaders of food assistance groups in Iowa say they’re seeing record numbers at the state’s food pantries.
A network of 14 central Iowa food pantries served 30-thousand people in November — the highest number in the organization’s 50 year history. A volunteer who coordinates feeding programs in Storm Lake says it feels they’ve been in crisis mode since COVID hit — and the churches and organizations in Storm Lake that are operating feeding programs are seeing demand double and triple since 2020.
The Food Bank of Iowa distributed two-and-a-half million pounds of food to food panties around the state in November. That’s the highest level in the Food Bank of Iowa’s 42 year history.
