Young St. Joseph man faces hearing on September shooting

A young St. Joseph man is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing at the Buchanan County Courthouse next week, charged in a September shooting that left another man with multiple gunshot wounds.

Bond at first was denied 20-year-old Dakota Ballentine, but later was set at $50,000 with the stipulation that he have no contact with the victim, not possess firearms, and submit to GPS monitoring.

Ballentine has been charged with assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

In the Probable Cause Statement, a St. Joseph police detective states officers responded to a residence in the 1200 block of South 18th Street shortly before 11pm September 18th after shots had been fired. Ballentine allegedly shot 40-year-old Timothy Myers several times while Myers stood outside his vehicle. Emergency crews found the victim unconscious and rushed him to the hospital. Myers recovered from his wounds.
