New Iowa law may prompt LGBTQ people and families to leave the state

(Radio Iowa) – The leader of an Iowa L-G-B-T-Q rights nonprofit says some people and families, especially ones with transgender members, will probably move out of Iowa because of legislation removing gender identity from the Iowa Civil Rights Act.

Max Mowitz, executive director of OneIowa, says to people who are leaving, they should know that “there are a lot of folks fighting behind you to try to make the state better.” To those who cannot leave, Mowitz says “We’re going to be right here alongside you,” adding, “We’re not going to give up on Iowa.”

Mowitz says anyone impacted by the legislation should contact OneIowa for resources. The bill was signed into law last Friday and takes effect July 1st.
