Iowa joins 30 states to ban handling a cell phone while driving

(Radio Iowa) – Governor Kim Reynolds has signed the bill that will make it illegal to handle a smart phone while driving, starting July 1st.

Reynolds was surrounded by dozens of people for the bill signing ceremony, including the families of Iowans who have died in accidents caused by distracted drivers. Roland Taylor of Terril was killed by a distracted driver on April 2nd — of 2023 — and his daughter says the law is important because it will save lives and provide justice for those who’ve been killed or injured by a distracted driver.

The father of a woman who was killed near Charles City by a distracted driver says it’s been frustrating that it took lawmakers so long to pass this law — and when he and his wife learned the Iowa House had finally passed it, they cried.
